The Stroke Center at United Hospital is certified by The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center. The Center provides an integrated and comprehensive approach to stroke care from diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation while offering evidence-based, best-of-practice acute care and rehabilitation. Center components include:

Emergency care

• Neurologist and neurosurgery coverage 24 hours per day
• Immediate assessment, intervention and management of acute stroke within the Emergency Department
• State-of-the-art neurointerventional techniques with the ability to administer intravenous and intra-arterial t-PA, intra-and extra-cranial cerebral artery angioplasty and mechanical clot retrieval

Inpatient care

• Designated inpatient unit for stroke care with telemetry monitoring capabilities
• Written protocols with evidence-based guidelines, directed by neurology and neurosurgeons and critical care (St. Paul Lung Lung Clinic)
• Inpatient nursing staff with special training in stroke care
• Multidisciplinary discharge planning

Inpatient rehabilitation

• Dedicated inpatient care by Sister KennyŽ Rehabilitation Institute physicians and nurses who specialize in stroke rehabilitation
• Individualized treatment plans for stroke survivors and their families
• Multidisciplinary teams including physical, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists and psychologists

Peer visitor program

• Outpatient care follow-up with interdisciplinary teams
• Monthly stroke survivor and family support group

Patient outcomes and education

• Measurement and tracking of stroke patient outcomes with a quality care improvement plan/process in place
• Annual stroke education and awareness through Sister KennyŽ Rehabilitation Institute
• Ongoing professional programs and conferences for health professionals
